sign up here! this is who we are amy claridge director my name is amy claridge, i was born and raised in my beloved south wales and now live in london where i work as a teacher of the deaf. i have a deaf mum and hard of hearing father and after years of boring my hearing friends with tales of my mum and dad it was only during a deaf culture lecture at bristol university, aged 18, that i found out that i was a 'coda' and that there were others like me out there! that day i met my first ever coda ... 8 years later and i've met hundreds of us! i really fell in love with 'coda' on my trip last summer to america where i worked at koda (kids of deaf adults) camp midwest in the wonderful land of wisconsin. as a koda i remember feelings of isolation and like some of my friends didn't 'understand'. it was incredible to see the difference in the american kodas; to see that they have a group of friends they don't have to explain their way of life to and who understand the challenges and joys that come with being a koda. words can't even describe how amazing an experience it was and the impact that the staff, kids and the general sense of coda 'community' and coda pride over there had on me. my lecturer, paddy ladd, once said to me it was as if i'd discovered my 'codahood' in those months over the pond. i'm now determined to get involved with coda uk & ireland to give our kodas the same opportunities and support network that i've been lucky enough to see and be a part of in america. i hope to meet you all at future events! feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected] vicki wan slattery director i am an oh-coda (only hearing coda). i discovered the acronym at my first and fabulous coda international conference in berlin. my mum, dad and older sister (by 23 months) are deaf. my mum is english, born in burnley where i have grown up and still live, my dad is chinese and was born in hong kong, he moved over to the uk when he was aged 7. my dad is the first deaf person in his family although on the english side there are now 4 generations of deaf. my mum and dad met as children playing in the deaf club, at early teens they went a few years without seeing each other and started a relationship when mum was 18 and dad 19. the rest is history! i first heard the term coda around the time i was doing my bsl level 3 aged 23. i thought, ‘oh there’s a name for it’ and never really gave it another thought. about a year later i met marie (march 2010) in the pub after uni (studying post graduate diploma in british sign language and english interpreting) and we chatted about coda. it turned out she knew my mum as she had worked with her, small world as we all know. i went to my first national coda conference in brighton, august 2010 and was amazed to be surrounded by codas! it was here that people were talking about coda international and when i heard it was in berlin the following year i had to go! many people have their own reasons for pursuing coda events, mine was curiosity and i am so glad i got involved. berlin was amazing and i can understand why people referred to it as ‘life-changing’. i have since been on the organising committee as well as attending codaland in 2015, attended coda austin 2016, coda-can in vancouver 2017 and i am going to coda haven in rhode island in 2018. i have also been camp staff and loved it in both 2016 and 2017 and will be going again this year 2018! you can contact me on [email protected] adrian bailey director my name is adrian and i'm very pleased to be a director of coda uk and ireland. from completing my degree in deaf studies, to becoming a teacher and now working as a bsl-english interpreter, coda has frequently been at the forefront of my mind - from those i interviewed for my research dissertation, those codas that were in the classes that i taught, to those codas that i work with now - i recognise that there is very important work for coda uk and ireland to do in making sure that all of us that have deaf families are able to live with authenticity and pride in our identities, and that we have access to services to meet our needs. being a director of such a new, progressive and compassionate organisation gives me the privilege of enabling positive change and i am always available to work with like minded people. coda uk & ireland registered company number: 8284195 home news/events under 18's volunteers about us coda world
